Vladimir Martirosyan
Graduate Researcher & MS Information Systems Student
My research focuses on using tools such as Neuro-Symbolic AI, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing to analyze information spread in social media, particularly the spread of misinformation and deceiving content.
Why is my aunt sending me the fifth link this week to buy a panacea drug for $29.99? How is there so much misinformation on social media? Why does it spread so quickly? Who creates it? Is this AI-generated?
These are questions many of us ask nowadays, yet the answers remain surprisingly elusive. My research centers on exactly these problems. I aim to uncover how misinformation spreads across social media by analyzing it both technically and socially -- examining the networks that enable and amplify its reach, the polarization and division it creates, and the platform characteristics that shape sharing behavior. Using emerging AI models and empirical research, I aim to design novel frameworks to detect and mitigate misinformation at scale. My long-term goal is to inform policy and drive action with social media platforms to drastically reduce the amount of misinformation in our feeds.
